Life Transitions Counseling

Transition is change; it’s often life’s way of asking us to re-examine our present way of being.  Sometimes these transitions are predictable, but too often they can be unpredictable, such as the sudden death of a loved one or a debilitating accident.  They all have one thing in common though: they force us to change our present life and we tend to be resistant to this.  A major transition puts us in a new place and sends us in a new path that we have never walked before.  The adjustment can be difficult as we experience feelings of fear, doubt and uncertainty.

Transition opens up a period of self-reflection which leads to a new beginning and a new outlook on life.  Want it or not, we are forced to let go of the old ways and learn new ones.  Forced learning is difficult and uncomfortable and we often feel disconnected form ourselves.  As we move through this phase, our feelings can be overwhelming and they can send us into emotional turmoil.  We may look for ways such as alcohol and drug abuse to numb the pain and anxiety.  When properly processed though, out of these overwhelming transitions, can come good and enriching experiences that can help us mature and grown stronger, spiritually and emotionally.

Life transitions are difficult because we naturally resist change, even the good ones, as they make us feel stressed and uneasy.  In short, we are not comfortable with the unknown.  Transitions are often beyond the scope of our own behavior patterns and ways of thinking and it is hard to form a completely new self identity.

Life does not care and change will happen whether we want it or not, forcing us into transition which can be the most painful experience of our life.  Nevertheless, there is no way to go around, over or under them, we must go through them and get to the other side.  Trying to ignore or resist these unavoidable changes will only prolong them and make them harder to endure, thus negatively affecting our daily life.  When it is overwhelmingly difficult to accept and stop fighting life changes, one should seek help from a Life Transitions Counselor for support, clarity and assistance to learn how to adapt to this fundamental shift.
