4 Little Known Facts About Reiki Massage

4 Little-Known Facts About Reiki Massage

If you feel stressed out or tired, or suffer from chronic pain, you've probably heard about or tried Reiki massage. If not, you should certainly give it a try.

Reiki is a Japanese massage technique based around channelling your inner energies (Qi), which involves intricate hand massage, particularly of a patient's head and neck area. Expert Reiki masseurs can create an intense feeling of tranquillity, allowing patients to enter deep states of meditation and shed their worries in the process.

It's a fascinating, mystical technique that achieves results without obvious explanation. Because of this, Reiki is growing fast, and could well be the ideal therapy for you. But before you book a massage, you'll need a quick introduction to Reiki. Here are some things most people don't know about it:

Reiki Has A Social Side

Reiki is not just a route to serenity and inner peace, it's also a social event. In Japan, expert Reiki practitioners get together in what are known as "Reiki shares." At a Reiki share, the aim is to approach each other in a spirit of friendship, positivity, and devotion to the life of the spirit. Practitioners lie down on the massage table, and other participants apply their hands, multiplying their individual energies, resulting in bursts of healing and emotion.

Unfortunately, not all Reiki shares are open to members of the public, often being limited to expert practitioners. However, there is another kind of ritual known as the Reiki circle, in which participants join hands around the person to be healed. Circles are often advertised on sites like Meetup or local notice boards, and there may be one in your neighborhood.

There's A Whole Genre of Music Dedicated to Reiki

New Age music and traditional healing seem to have a natural fit, and that's definitely the case with Reiki. For example, German artist Georg Deuter regularly releases synth and acoustic guitar symphonies built around Reiki themes. His aim is to create a mindset conducive to deep meditation -- the perfect way to approach a Reiki massage session.

Jonathan Goldman takes things a step further. For him, everything in the universe has its own vibration frequency, including our bodies. Good health exists when the human body vibrates at its natural frequency, and when this frequency becomes erratic, the right sounds can restore a natural vibration.

Reiki Is A Popular Treatment for People With Disabilities

Reiki is well known for its stress-reliving properties, particularly for the disabled or people suffering from chronic pain. In the UK, the Disability Foundation, which advocates ways to improve the quality of life for people with physical or mental disabilities, believes Reiki can work wonders. It works particularly well for those with anxiety-related mental health issues, helping to put them at ease, restoring healthy sleeping patterns, and encouraging them to participate in wider society.

Reiki May Have Christian and Buddhist Origins

Superficially, you might think that Reiki emerged solely out of Japanese Buddhism, due to its emphasis on Qi and its founding by Japanese thinker Mikao Usui in the 1920s. The Catholic Church certainly thought so, branding Reiki as superstitious and pagan, and urging all Catholics to avoid it.

However, Usui may also have been inspired as much by the life of Jesus Christ as by Buddha. His immediate successors noted that Usui travelled widely (he gained a degree in theology from the University of Chicago) and drew parallels between the tactile nature of Reiki massage and Christ's healing by touch, so there might be a connection there. In any case, it seems that Usui was interested in much more than Japanese tradition.

Reiki is a fantastic way to relieve stress, sort out your sleeping patterns, and help you to feel refreshed, but it's much more than that. It's also an extremely powerful spiritual experience that seeks to tap into the deepest energies within the human body. If you want to take your interest further, join a Reiki circle or build a New Age music collection. There's no better way to unwind and rebalance your spiritual potential.
