Banish Clutter for a Clearer Mind and a Cleaner Home
Are you a hoarder? Is your home filled to overflowing? Do you find it hard to let go of things that have outgrown their usefulness? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, it may be time to re-think your attitude to the clutter that you have allowed to accumulate over the years.
It is true that treasured objects can give a sense of security and we all need to hang onto a few things that bring back memories of the past or loved ones. However, keeping too many things is not good for your mental health. It means that you remain stuck in the past, unable to live in the present and face the future with confidence.
If you have a problem with clutter, ask yourself why you are hanging onto things. If you think that it is wasteful to throw things away, try giving your unwanted articles to charities or, if you prefer, have a garage sale or sell items on eBay.
Perhaps you keep unnecessary objects because you are afraid that you will miss them when they are gone. If this is the case, let go of three items and wait for a week to see if you miss them. The chances are that you will have forgotten about them. This should give you the confidence to clear out the rest of your clutter.
Some people want to hold onto everything pertaining to a particularly happy or sad time in their life, such as the birth of a baby or the death of a parent. If this is true in your case, sort through such items and select between five and ten things that hold the most memories for you. You can then keep these in a memory box and get rid of all of the others.
You may be keeping things because you believe that they will come in useful at some point in the future. If so, ask yourself if you have used such an item during the past year. If the answer is “no,” it is unlikely that it will be useful in the near future, so it is time to dispose of it.
If you are a collector of books, antiques, ornaments or any other objects that take up a lot of space in your home, try reducing your collection by getting rid of any duplicate items and keeping only the objects that are most important to you. You may even be able to sell the whole collection. Look upon it as the end of one chapter in your life and the beginning of a new one.
