How Hypnotherapy Can Treat Obesity and Eating Disorders

A mind is a powerful tool. What you think dramatically influences your health and behavior. Negative thoughts can cause stressful feelings, which may result in headaches, high blood pressure, anxiety, lack of motivation, appetite changes, sleep issues, chest pain, and a host of other deplorable conditions. Similarly, positive thinking can increase your lifespan and improve your cardiovascular and immune systems.

It's no stretch of the imagination that changing your train of thought can dramatically influence your life, health, and behavior. That's why the placebo effect is sometimes so useful: if your mind believes it, it will come true.

Hypnotherapy has proven to be a useful solution when treating obesity and eating disorders. Changing the way someone thinks influences their brain and body.

It might sound like a pipe dream, but consider the story of Julie Evans. She was a 35-year-old stay-at-home mom in Michigan. Pregnancy weight and low self-esteem contributed to her dramatic weight gain, and she soon weighed as much as 287 pounds. Evans was desperate for an answer. That's when she stumbled upon an unusual solution: hypnotherapy.

She met up with Dr. Rena Greenberg who practices an unusual technique called hypnosis gastric bypass. A gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that shrinks the patient's stomach and suppresses their appetite. Greenberg's version is similar, but she merely tricks the patient into believing their stomach is shrinking.

Evans felt an almost immediate effect as she began craving spinach right after her first appointment. Her appetite decreased by about three-fourths the next day. She also started exercising and lost 150 pounds after two years of hard work. Furthermore, she's maintained her weight for at least three years.

Hypnotherapy can help treat obesity and eating disorders by making several positive suggestions to patients. Those who undergo hypnosis may develop a greater understanding of mental barriers and can overcome these obstacles to achieve their goal. For example, a hypnotherapist might:

??Encourage the patient to think more positively about them

??Help the patient visualize their weight loss goals

??Address their fear of change

??Aid in stress management to avoid stress eating

??Enhance sleep and exercise influence dietary changes

??Develop the motivation to make lasting changes

??Allow the patient to change their thoughts about food

Part of the reason hypnotherapy is so effective is that practitioners use mental imagery to influence their patients. For example, a hypnotherapist might have their patient envision a cheeseburger on a white, fluffy cloud as it flies upwards and disappears forever. This sort of symbolic imagery might sound corny, but these mental practices make a huge difference in patient's perceptions and attitudes towards cravings.

Keep in mind that hypnosis alone isn't necessarily enough to make you slim. Some studies have proven its usefulness in weight loss, but you must also incorporate diet and exercise for a lasting change. Positive self-talk and reinforcement play an influential role in helping people achieve their goals. Hypnotherapy can help guide you in the right direction, but you also must be willing to put in the necessary work.
