Identify the Cause of Your Overeating and Take Back Control

Obesity is a condition by which millions are affected, and it's most commonly a result of one of the most difficult addictions to overcome, which is overeating.  Food addiction is in a class of itself because it's not something from which you can completely abstain.  Total abstinence from a substance or addictive behavior is a crucial component to most addiction treatment plans because moderation is next to impossible.

The good news is that it is possible to remove the compulsion from eating and to stop relying on food as a source of entertainment, a cure for boredom or a way to temporarily mask feelings.

Identify the Source of the Problem

It's important to understand the behaviors and mindsets that cause you to overeat.  When you feel inclined to reach for food, ask yourself if you're eating because you're hungry or if there is another purpose that food is serving at the time.  If you're not hungry, evaluate your current mood.  Are you anxious or depressed?  Is it just because there is nothing else to do?

It's important to understand your motivation for overeating so that you can address the problem directly.  It's not enough to merely say that you want to stop overeating.  To prevent the progression of such a tricky addiction, you need to identify the void that's being filled with food and find more constructive ways of meeting that emotional, spiritual, or mental demand.

Know Your Options

It's essential for you to know that there are tons of options available to help you overcome your food addiction.  Once you know your triggers, it will be easier to narrow down the most logical choices for you.

You may want to start out by adding yoga and meditation to your daily activities.  That would provide a healthy physical alternative to food and fill empty spaces of time for you.

For many who have fallen into the cycle of overeating, though, there is no simple fix or just one thing to add.  An entire lifestyle change is required.  At first, that sounds scary, because it seems so overwhelming.  It means a lot of change.  Remember, though, that it will be change or the better!

If you need motivation, you may be a perfect candidate for hypnotherapy.  During hypnosis, the therapist presents you with a few suggestive notions that are in line with your goals.  You may be given tools to use to keep you grounded when you feel out of focus.  An example would be something simple like touching your thumb and your middle finger together.

It may be worth your while to speak to a health coach who can make recommendations for meals that suit your tastes and will help to achieve your physical and dietary goals.  Other types of coaches that may be able to help you are life coaches and spiritual coaches, whichever you find most appropriate.  These are people who understand your personal development goals and have mastered the art of achieving them.

You may also want to investigate holistic psychotherapy.  Holistic psychotherapy is an integrative type of therapy that encompasses all areas of your life.  You and your holistic psychotherapist will build a well-rounded treatment plan designed to decrease your food cravings and compulsion to overeat by taking each aspect of your life into account and addressing each individually, carefully crafting a plan of action geared toward helping you reach your highest potential.

Obesity and overeating can be difficult challenges to overcome, but with proper health education and naturopathic treatment, necessary change can occur, and weight loss can begin.
